Symposium 2010
Information for Registered Participants
Before you arrive
Check to make sure all your
pre requisites are in order. If
a CR form is required for your course please mail it in to BCUNA for central
registration and approval at least 4-5 weeks prior to the symposium, only
authorized forms will be valid for classes. Please remember that exemptions
are the exception not the norm. Make
sure your first aid and cpr cards are up to date. Coach candidates for
Level 2 Coach Assessment and above will need logbooks. Be prepared to
pay appropriate BCU fees during your course, BCU fees are not included
in symposium fee. For fee and form info visit BCU North America.
Registration/ Checking In
Check in at Sea Kayak Georgia on Tuesday, October 20 from 9:00 am until 9:00 pm.If you are not arriving until early Wednesday we
will be in the shop by 7:00 am. Check in involves completing waivers and
checking to see that your name is listed on the roster for each day of
classes. Your launch site will be listed on the class roster, make a note of it, this is where the class will meet that morning.
Parking on Tybee Island
Parking passes are issued
through Sea Kayak Georgia by the City of Tybee Island. You may purchase
passes at the time of registration/ check in. All parking on Tybee is pay to park. If
you buy a pass and park anywhere other than designated parking you will
receive a ticket, which you are responsible for paying.
Parking is limited, so plan to arrive early to the launch site so that you will have time to unload gear and park without being late for class.
Please honor all access issues with diplomacy, if you can't find parking you will have to go to a lot further away and walk back to the landing. Do not block access to launch site for the trailers or other vehicles unloading. At the Inlet Avenue launch site the Sea Kayak Georgia trailer has to drive down a very narrow lane. Please do not block our access to and from this landing. The van is making multiple pickup so time is of the essence in the afternoon.
Class Times
All Classes are conducted
from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. Multi day classes may extend later than 4:00
pm if agreed upon by coach and students.
Class Changes
You may find you wish to
change a class due to progressing faster or slower than you expected.
We are very happy to make schedule changes. Here's how it works: come to
Sea Kayak Georgia in person (phone calls for schedule changes cannot be accepted) and a staff member will assist
you in moving your name to the class of your choice if there is availability.
Classes can be changed between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm the day before only.
What to Bring to Class
Appropriate clothing will
make your day much more enjoyable. October can have varying
conditions daily. Keep a close watch on the weather the week before you
arrive. Prepare for both moderately warm and quite cool.
You need to bring enough water to last for the duration of the class.
Pack your lunch and bring it with you. Don't forget your sunscreen. If the weather is cooler a thermos with hot beverage will be a nice addition to your kit.
Dinners
Every year we offer two group
dinners that are loads of fun. Wednesday night we will be offering our Island Extravaganza and Saturday night we'll have an Oyster Roast.
The Extravaganza consists of coastal southern style food. Vegetarian options
will be offered both evenings. You must sign up for the dinners by October 6, and preferably when you register, so we
can let the chefs know how many are coming. Only participants with reservations can attend the dinners. Please don't forget the deadline if you want to join the fun.
Last years dinners were not our favorite or yours. This year we will be serving the dinners here at Sea Kayak Georgia as we have always done in the past. Mike Robinson will be hosting the Oyster Roast this year, back by popular demand.
Thursday night we are hosting the coach dinner at Huc a Poos. Participants who like pizza and ale may wish to dine at Huc a Poos to make it a kayaking get together.
Presentations
Every evening just before the presentations we will have
a social time for students and coaches to get together and know one another.
The social will be followed by a presentation given by a different coach
each night. All participants are invited to attend presentations. This year we will have a drawing on Saturday night to give away one free symposium attendance for the next symposium. We will also give away a paddle from Werner to the most improved symposium attendee which will be voted on by the coaches.
Retail Shop
We maintain a full service shop with all the essentials needed for a great time on the water. We also have lots of cool Sea Kayak Georgia stuff, too. All in stock gear, accessories, clothing will be on sale to symposium participants so save room in your luggage for some extra goodies (or we can ship).
Boat Sales
We will have a grand selection
of Nigel Dennis Kayaks in time for the symposium.
In addition, Valley Canoe Products will be in full stock.
